Blogging for Jesus

Pastors writing pastoral articles on topics of faith and theology for public consumption are part of the Christian heritage going back to Martin Luther and beyond.  Through the years most local church pastors have published pastoral articles in their church's monthly newsletters.  In our contemporary digital age, many pastors now utilize internet technology to spread the Gospel message online via pastoral blogs. Pastors in the Evangelical Association are no exception.

Wikipedia describes a blog as "a type of website usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.  Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries."  Many blogs also offer readers the ability interact with the content and share comments on what they have read.

A number of EA pastors across the country utilize blogs in their online ministries in a variety of ways.

Rev. John Bigelow, pastor of St. James Reformed Church, Mt. Pleasant, NC publishes a weekly blog entitled, "This Pastor's ViewPoint."  In addition to weekly, practical reflections of Scripture, Rev. Bigelow includes personal creative photography, prayer concerns, church announcements, and bits of Christian humor.  Rev. Bigelow uses  the free blog tools from "Blogger" to maintain his blog site.  Blogger is available at www.blogger.com

A member of the St. James Reformed Church congregation suprised Rev. Bigelow in 2008 when he compiled two years worth of articles from "A Pastor's Viewpoint" and had them published into a hard cover book by the same title.  That book can be ordered on LuLu Marketplace  for $25.00.

Rev. Steve Disher, pastor of St. Paul's Reformed Church in Newton, NC maintains a blog entitled "The Dish" that reprints the pastoral articles from the church's monthly newsletter along with video and articles on current news that impacts the Christian faith.  Rev. Disher uses the free blog software, "WordPress" from www.wordpress.org to develop his blog.

Rev. Ron Shifley an EA church planting pastor from Spencerville, OH also utilizes "WordPress" to maintian his occassional blogzine entitled, "Living Faith Outside of the Box."  The blog not only contains articles on living faith in contemporary culture but also utilizes YouTube videos and encourages users to join the new church start's FaceBook page.  In Addition, Rev. Shifley has published a number of blog tie-in advertisements in Spencerville's local newspaper to help publicize the blog and his new church start, Merge: a Living Faith Christian Community, which is currently under redevelopment.

Rev. David Peterson, pastor of Salem Church of Darmstadt in Evansville, IN actually maintains a blog using "Blogger" tools from www.blogger.com,  entitled "God in the Now" which Rev. Peterson describes as "Christian faith for everyday of the week."  It contains blog entries with topics like curent events, faith, family, discipleship, marriage, prayer, spirituality and more.

In addition, to the pastoral blog, Salem Church of Darmstadt also publishes a blog for it's youth ministry entitled, "Salem Senior Youth" which is written by Jake Kohlmeyer, one of the church's youth advisers.

Throughout the EA, pastors blog for Jesus in a number of ways that are effective for their local church's ministries.  There is no single method for effective blogging other than to engage the faithful and the public at large with meditative thoughts, based of Scripture, that cause them to seek God more and more in their everyday lives.  The best part of blogging is, that for the most part, it is a "free" way to get God's Word out on the blogosphere where people surf the internet for kernels of truth.  Have you ever thought of blogging for Jesus?  God has a Word to share if you have the time to spare and publish it online.
