Independence

I think I've gained some new insight into God's amazing love.  I know He loves us, and wants the best for us - He wants us to be in an eternal faithful obedient relationship with Him in glory everlasting.  I know that in the process of maturing, after giving us life, God sets us free - to make choices of our own in living on earth.  And I believe God watches over us, wanting us to make appropriate choices, giving advice along the way - through His Word, through His presence, through His Son.  Yet, He allows us to make those choices - we set the course of our life by the choices and decisions we make.

God is always present, and always waiting, and we have the responsibility of seeking Him, following Him, and serving Him.

With Ryan headed off to college this fall, I believe I've gained a new insight into what God must feel like when He sets us free to live.  Through college orientation, the word Lynne and I heard most was "independence."  Ryan has reached the time in his life when he needs to make his own decision, when he needs to have some space and distance from protective and sheltering parents, when he needs to tend to his own finances, belongings, daily routine and schedule; and when he pursues God on his one: making his own choices about reading the Word, worshipping God, and participating in a church.

It really is like Karen Walker shared in worship on May 31st - like the release of a bird, parents need to let their child fly off on their own.

I wonder if God feels the emotions I've been feeling?  I wonder is God is anxious over us, as I am over Ryan?  I wonder if God askes "what if" questions like I've been asking in my own mind?  I wonder yet I am convinced of God's design and direction:

Romans 8:28  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Matthew 28:20   And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Hebrews 6:1-2  Therefore let us leave the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement.

Proverbs 22:6  Train a child in the way he should go, and when hs is old he will not turn from it.

In what I am encountering now in my life and in how I face what lies ahead, I turn to the Word of the Lord for wisdom, comfort and direction.  As I search the Scriptures, God reveals Himself, and I am reassured, my wonderings answered, and my faith in God is strengthened.

As you encounter situations and transitions in life, know that God's Word is the book of life and faith - turn to it for reassurance and nourishment.  Discover more of God's love and care.  Amen.
