Churches Use Sports Teams to Build Fellowship
EA churches across the country utilize a number of different "sports" teams to deepen fellowship both within their local church and in their surrounding communities.
St. John's Christian Church in Archbold, OH hosts a Bible Quiz Team called "Descendents of Abe" that recently captured the trophy for the highest scoring team at the Bible Quiz meet on February 21, 2009.
The church participates in the Northwest Ohio Bible Quizzing League. League matches run from January through March. St. John's participates in nearly 35 matches a year plus the local tournament. Teams consist of four to seven youth, ranging from grade 6 to age 20, with four teens per team competing at a time. Nine area churches participate in the League. A season's scope of questioning is limited to just a couple of books from the Bible that Bible Quiz Teams study together for advance preparation.
The objectives of the Bible Quizzing League are to foster disciplines of Bible study, building Christian friendships both within the local church and among participating churches, developing teamwork, life learning skills and a mature competitve spirit in which teens learn to compete with other teams not against them.

Salem Reformed Church in Hagerstown, MD, utilizes volleyball both to deepen fellowship and for community outreach. On Tuesday evenings the church's Family Life Center is home to lively games of volleyball in which 20 - 24 teens (a mixture of church members and other local youth) ages 14 and up participate. The evenings begin with devotions. The person leading devotions for the evening selects the next person to do the devotion. Thus, fun, fellowship, spiritual growth, and outreach are the hallmark of the church's volleyball ministry. The church is pastored by Rev. Steve Wagoner.
Living Faith Christian Community in Spencerville, OH hosts a Dartball Team that participates in the Spencerville Area Church Dartball League. Dartball is a co-ed, intergenerational sport that combines the game of darts with the rules of baseball. Teams throw darts at a distance of 20' towards a baseball like diamond board. Matches are held on Tuesday evenings from January through March. Each evening's match consists of three 9 inning games. The Dartball Team was the first fellowship ministry started by the pioneer congergation prior to the launch of public worship. Dartball has helped foster fellowship within the congregation, but more importantly it has deepened Christian fellowship and unity among participating churches in the Spencerville area. The church is pastored by Rev. Ron Shifley. Learn more about their Dartball Team online.
