Jesus is the Standard
A gentleman walked past a clockmaker’s store every day on his way to work. He would study the stately grandfather clock in the window for some time before continuing on his way. One day the clockmaker, who had noticed this man standing outside his shop window each morning, ventured out to strike up a conversation. “This one is a real beauty, isn’t it?” the clockmaker asked, pointing to the clock on display.
“She sure is” answered the gentleman. “Actually, I have another reason for stopping here every morning. I am the supervisor at the local factory. It is my job to blow the whistle at precisely four o’clock each afternoon. My wristwatch is notoriously unreliable, so every day I stop and reset it with this magnificent grandfather’s clock of yours.”
“Is that so?” replied the clockmaker, who was beginning to feel a bit uneasy. “I hate to tell you this, but the reason this clock doesn’t sell is that I’ve never been able to make it work precisely right. In fact, I readjust it every single day—right at four o’clock, when I hear the whistle go off at your factory!”
People today base their values and decisions on public opinion, what is popularly acceptable or what simply “feels right” to them personally – not realizing such reference points may be no more reliable than the factory supervisor’s wristwatch.
Jesus emerges as the standard on which every human soul can rely. Look to Jesus, the sinless, crucified and risen Savior, who knows God, is God, and reliably reveals God’s will and God Himself to us in His eternal Word of truth. Trust Him now and forever.
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” - John 6:35-40 NIV
